Den of Vipers by K.A. Kinght is the story of Roxy, who is sold by her POS father to the city’s most notorious…gang, mafia, mobsters…four brothers known as the Vipers. Kenzo, Diesel, Ryder, and Garrett. Initially, they have this idea that they’re going to be able to do whatever they want with her, but they don’t realize that Roxy doesn’t put up with bullshit.
This is technically my first reverse harem. I tried reading Hate by Tate James, but I couldn’t stand Madison Kate. Roxy, on the other hand, is a badass, and I appreciate that. She does get a little whiny at times, but nowhere near enough to make me want to quit the book. I liked the Vipers. I thought they all had their own personalities. There was good character development and growth with the brothers, and they made the story enjoyable. I don’t know that Roxy grew as a character as much as she grew to like the Vipers over time.
The plot is where I think the book fell short for me. We have two different plot lines fighting for attention. There’s Roxy and the Vipers trying to find some way of coexisting, and then there’s the mafia plot of the Vipers trying to destroy their rivals, called The Triad. I think what happens is that the mafia plot gets way overshadowed by the romance plot. I personally would have liked to see more of a balance, and that’s just my opinion.
I will say that I enjoyed Knight’s writing style and her ability to tell a complex story in such a cohesive way. Like I said earlier, I just wish there was a little more balance. As far as dark romances go, Den of Vipers is pretty dark. With its themes, violence, gore, and spice. These are all things I like to see in a good dark romance. There was a decent amount of gore to satisfy the horror fan in me, but I’m sure you’re wondering about the heat.
When I consider how spicy a book is, I look at the number of scenes in relation to the length of the book and of course, their content. I think Den of Vipers is a solid 3 out of 5 peppers. There’s a good amount of spicy scenes, but other than the ones involving Diesel, I’d say they’re typical of a dark romance.
Overall, I think Den of Vipers is good, but for my ADHtism, I don’t think harem and reverse harem stories are for me. There’s just too much going on. But if that is your jam, you’re going to love this one.
